Tips for Managing Remote Workers

With so many people working from home, it has become increasingly more difficult for business owners to manage them.  In fact, many business owners dread the idea of hiring workers who will work remotely because they fear losing the control to track their progress and ensure that the work is being done efficiently and properly.  This doesn't have to be the case, with the right tools and great communication; it can be rather easy to manage work that is done in the office and that which is done by remote employees.  Here are some great tips to help you manage your remote workers and create a positive and productive workplace.

  • Make Your Employees Comfortable – To help make your remote employees comfortable with their job, you may want to invite them to spend some time at the home office.  This will help them become acquainted with their fellow workers and allow you to properly train and instruct them on how they should perform their work while at home.  By bringing in your remote workers from time to time, they will begin to feel more invested in the work they do and the company the do it for.
  • Embrace Technology – Many managers express that the hardest part of managing remote workers is the limited communication.  As a business owner, it is up to you to ensure that there is a clear line of communication between managers and remote workers.  This can be done establishing set times and days when remote employees and their managers will phone, video chat, and instant message.  This will help instill in both managers and remote workers the importance of communication.
  • Create A Company Culture – Once you have hired and trained your remote workers, you should do everything you can to create a company culture that is present both in the home office and away from it.  This will help keep you remote workers engaged and happy, which means they will continue to do their best work and remain productive.  You may also want to consider scheduling regular visits to the home office where the entire team can get together.  This will allow them to share ideas and discuss new projects.

Managing remote workers may be a little hard to do at first, but once you become accustomed to the process it can become much easier.  If you incorporate some of the tips I have listed above, the process should go smoothly for both you and your employees.
